Nanakusa Gayu(Rice Porridge)
(Jan.7, Sumida-ku,Tokyo)

The custom of eating Nanakusa-gayu seems to come from China about 8thcentury.(The seven spring herbs seemed to be the different ones with mentioned above at that time). They said if people eat Nanakusa-gayu on Jan.7, they could be in good health all the year round. Actually,"Haru no Nanakusa" contains good things for the stomach so that eating Nanakusa-gayu is reasonable after eating and drinking too much during the New Year's Day. Also it was necessary for them to supply some vegetables in winter at that time.
