Morning glories were imported from China to Japan as medicinal herbs in the 8th century. The ones introduced first are supposed to be blue. They repeatedly became popular between the early 19th century to the early 20th century. During the time unusual shape of flowers, large or different colored flowers were developed taken advantage of mutation what genetics calls today.
