This picture is a female of gOmurasaki"(Sasakia charonda Hewitoson), means a giant purple butterfly. A male butterfly has wings glittering in purple and they said it is the most beautiful butterfly in Japan. An Omurasaki lives in the thicket because it eats leaves during a larva and sucks sap when it becomes an imago. Once we could see them almost the whole area of Japan but we rarely see them now because a thicket are diminishing due to development. Omurasaki is so sensitive to the change of the environment that it would disappear first if people cultivate the thicket.
