Hechima

Hechima was introduced to Japan in the early of Edo period(from early 17th century to the middle of 19th century.) Sap comes from a stem when it was cut has been used as a liquid medicine to relieve a cough, a phlegm or an asthma.Sap gathered on the night of Aug.15th in the old calender seemed to be especially effective. Hechima has an another effect to cool down the body or good for a skin disease. At present, in a hot district like Okinawa, people eat flesh of Hechima and use water as toilet lotion. Also they use a loofah as a sponge to wash body.@
