Jinrikisha-Rickshaw
(Asakusabashi in Taito Ward, Tokyo)

@ Yesterday, on August 4th, a jinrikisha - a rickshaw was caught in sight of near Asakusa JR station. It was drawing people's attention there, since it can be hardly seen today. It carried a passenger from Asakusa in the neighborhood.

@Jinrikisha literally means a car moved by human labor and is so to speak a taxi of Meiji Era(the late 19c to the early 20c).They started running a business with it at Nihonbashi, Tokyo in 3 of meiji Era(1870), and became as widespread as 130,000 were registered in 10 of Meiji Era(1877). Until a jinrikisha appeared, a vehicle named Kago, carried by men, had been popular, but after jinrikisha came out, Kago was replaced by the faster jinrikisha. And after Tisho Era(1912`), bicycles and cars took the place of jinrikisha. The jinrikshas runnig around now are for tourists and you can ride them in the sightseeing spots like Asakusa, Kamakura and Kyoto where old towns and streets still remain.
