Daruma Doll Fair
(Takasaki city, Gunma pre.)

　There is a Daruma doll fair in the precincts of a temple-Darumaji located in Takasaki city, Gunma pre. on Jan. 6 and Jan.7 every year. 　

　It is said the origin of the fair is that about 200 year ago, the chief priest of Darumaji created a wooden mold of a Daruma doll and let farmers make a lot of Darumas from it and sell them at the fair in the temple in order to relieve farmers in poverty because of a big famine.
　Even now 80% of Japanese Daruma dolls, nearly 1.6 million Darumas are produced here in a yaer.
