Sugawara-no-Michizane
( Koto-ku, Tokyo Jan.14)

This statue in the picture is 5 year-old Michizane(845-903). He was born in a scholor family line and it is reported he wrote a "waka"(a 31-syllable Japanese poem) when he was five years old.
Afterward, he got the highly position in politics with receiving Emperors' favor. At that time, as Fujiwara Family held real power in politics, Michizane's promotion was an exceptional case.
But Michizane was relegated to Dazaifu, Kyushu in 901 with a false charge of Fujiwara-no-Tokihira(It was substantial exile) and died in 903.
After the Michizane's death, Kyoto suffered from lightning damage, spreading epidemic and a famine. Also Fujiwara-no-Tokihira and his cooperators died one after another.
People thought these happenings caused by Michizane's resentment and celebrated Michizane as god.

Michizane was so bright person that they celebrated him as god of letters afterward. Kameido-Tenjin was built about 340 years ago.
