Feb.26,1936
Leading about 1400 soldiers, 21 young officers in the army occupied the whole area of Nagata-cho in Tokyo, the Japanese political center and killed officials including two ministers on Feb.26, 1936.(The prime minister was safely rescued.)
The military leaders initially was taking an attitude to accept the affair but the emperor ordeded the rebels to go back to their troops on Feb.28.
The order was issued through the media such as radio on Feb 29. The officers thought their situation was unfavorable and made the soldiers go back to their troops.
Two of the officers killed themselves and the rest of them surrendered themselves. Fifteen officers and four citizens were executed as a result of the trial. The photo shows a memorial to the dead of the affair which is located in Shibuya-ward, Tokyo.
