Matsuo Basho Goes on a Journey on May 16,1689

Matsuo Basho, haiku poet left Edo (the old name for Tokyo) on May 16, 1689. (Mar.27 according to the then calender), because he was strongly tempted to make on a wandering journey. Basho made a lot of haiku (short poem in a fixed form) while he traveled from Edo to the Tohoku region and down to Western Japan covering about 2400km. The photo shows a place where Basho lived between 1677 and 1680. He was supervising a repair work on the Kanda river at that time.
