Basho's Entire Life
(Sekiguchi in Bunkyo-ward, Tokyo)

Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) enhanced haiku to art, which had been just a common words play. He was born as a child of a lower-ranking samurai in the present Mie. But he decided to devote his life to haiku. Then he quit samurai and left for Edo. Basho traveled many times and made many haiku. In those days, traveling was risky and not popular.
