Matsuo Basho, haiku poet left Edo (the old name for Tokyo) on May 16, 1689. (Mar.27 according to the then calender), because he was strongly tempted to make on a wandering journey. Basho made a lot of haiku (short poem in a fixed form) while he traveled from Edo to the Tohoku region and down to Western Japan covering about 2400km.
